About painter

Salvador Dali phone and sign his plates of the Divine Comedy at the Hotel Meurice

Salvador Dalí (1904 - 1989) - greatest artist of our time. Paranoiac-critical method becomes his way of thinking and self-realization in art.

Dali loved to explain the meaning of his work, but ... not too deep into the details ... "If you find that this is too simple, do not hesitate to tell me, I would be happy to complicate it little be ..." .

The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (1265 - 1321) remains today one of the pillars upon which the European literary tradition has been built. Originally titled simply Commedia, Dante's masterpiece was written at the end of his life and finished just before his death in 1321. Presented in the edition published by Les Heures Claires is Salvador Dali's interpretation of the wonderful and intense imagery that Dante formed through spinning a web of words both exciting and exhilarating.

My whole ambition in the pictorial plan is to materialize with the most imperialist fury of precision images of concrete irrationality" (S. Dali).

To celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante's birth, the government of Italy planned to issue a special edition of The Divine Comedy. For this issue, Dali created 101 watercolors between 1951 and 1960. In 1954, La Libreria della Stato published a brochure with seven of the paintings reproduced full size as lithographs, together with sample pages of the text. The prints are 16 1/2 inches x 11 inches with narrow margins. Due to the opposition these prints created, the Italian government dropped the project and postage stamps were issued instead. Several years later, Joseph Foret, in Paris, who had previously published other Dali suites such as Don Quichotte, started production of the prints by wood engraving. Master engravers worked from 1959 - 1963 to carve 3500 separate wood blocks for the 100 prints. The Divine Comedy project was then taken over and completed by Jean Estrade of Les Heures Claires.

Dali's creativity, as well as any work of a genius, is relevant today, and his next thought: "I think we are now in the Middle Ages, but the day will come Renaissance" - is becoming more present in the context of growth of spirituality lack and depersonalization of man in the modern world. Dali wrote:

Marina Vlady
Over the centuries, Leonardo da Vinci and me, we are reaching out to each other"

Salvador Dali.

We also - we should reach out to our contemporary, who, through his art, makes us think, trying to change our world to become better.

Provenance :
the book was owned by Marina Vlady and was sold on auction "Souvenirs de Marina Vlady" in Paris in Hotel Drouot, at November 25, 2015 : Lot №5.

The woodcuts can be either forward or backwards and can be viewed by placing the print between you and a light source. The watermark will be visible along the lower edge if there.

General Presentation :

Propozycja zorganizowania wystawy w związku z naszym projektem "Arcydzieła sztuki światowej - dla każdego ucznia". Celem wystawy jest, aby oryginalne dzieła sztuki światowej dostępne były dla wszystkich uczniów województwa wielkopolskiego, bez wyjątku.

Głównym celem tego projektu, dzięki swoim unikalnym formom finansowania, będzie umożliwienie wszystkim szkołom z 226 gmin województwa wielkopolskiego (które zamieszkuje 3,47 mln osób) podjęcie w murach szkolnych oryginalnych dzieł sztuki światowych mistrzów - Dali, Chagall, De Chirico, Magritte, Hans Holbein (młodszy), Degas oraz prac gwiazd filmowych. Mamy wieloletnie doświadczenie w organizacji wystaw w Unii Europejskiej, mających zasłużoną, dobrą reputację u specjalistów w tej dziedzinie.

Projekt jest innowacyjny i będzie dążył do osiągnięcia dwóch głównych celów:

- edukacyjny - jest to unikalna forma edukacji skutecznie wspomagająca pedagogiczną rolę szkół.

- promocja województwa wielkopolskiego (i całej Polski), jako miejsca, gdzie istnieją korzystne warunki do realizacji unikalnych i innowacyjnych projektów edukacyjnych i kulturalnych.

Exhibition Theme :

The exhibition "La Divine Comedie" is composed by exhibits from private collection of original works made by Salvador Dali : 100 aquarel xylographs.

At the exhibition is also presented a unique material which helps the viewer to understand the scale of the accomplished work and to penetrate into the process of creating the represented masterpiece - the color decompositions of 6 plates (350 xylographs), as well as the certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer's lithographs.

The aim of the exhibition is to help the public to see and understand how Dali materializes his views thanks to his special artistic language in the form of images, which often take an intangible aspect, but clearly are felt by spectator. The exhibited works demonstrate Dali’s creative side his amazing imagination.

In 1950, at the request of Libreria dello Stato in Rome, Salvador Dali undertakes to paint 100 watercolors illustrating 100 songs from the Divine Comedy of Dante. In 1951, some watercolors are exposed in Rome. While the Master's work is continuing, the Italian government finally has decided that Dante's work must be illustrated by an Italian painter. The contract between the Libreria dello Stato and Salvador Dali has been cancelled and the painter recover ownership of his work. By his own initiative, Salvador Dali decided to finish all the suite. The work continued from 1950 to 1959. In July 1959, Les Heures Claires buy exclusivity and all copyrights: suite is carefully engraved and printed together under the leadership of Jean Estrade. This work will be considered as one of the most significant of the 20 century. The selection of colors, engraving of 3500 woodplates, which were necessary for the creation of 100 xylographs, took four years, or 55 months of continuous work by a group of best specialists in presence and continuous assessment of the Master (April 1959 - November 1963).

To understand Dali, we should put the fundamental principle that he was an intellectual artist. His painting is primarily to illustrate his theories and ideas. It was important for him to represent not what we see, but what we feel or think, probably without realizing it.

As for the watermarks, you will find one of the following three instances. The woodcut can bear a BFK Rives watermark, a Les Heures Claires watermark, or no watermark at all. The watermarks appeared only twice per sheet of four woodcuts, two out of every four are without a watermark. The woodcuts can be either forward or backwards and can be viewed by placing the print between you and a light source. The watermark will be visible along the lower edge if there.
